Effective from April 2025, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will implement updated regulations for trailer brake testing to enhance road safety and ensure consistent braking performance across commercial fleets. The key changes include:​

• Mandatory Laden Roller Brake Tests: Trailers are required to undergo a minimum of four laden roller brake tests annually. These tests must be conducted during safety inspections, with the vehicle properly loaded to provide accurate assessments of braking performance.
• Alternative Compliance via EBPMS: As an alternative to the quarterly laden roller brake tests, operators can implement an Electronic Braking Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS). This system continuously monitors brake performance in real-time, providing data that can be used to assess braking efficiency and compliance.

Regular brake testing is crucial to maintain vehicle safety, prevent brake failures, and comply with legal obligations. It helps identify potential issues before they lead to accidents or costly repairs.​

It depends on your fleet’s needs. Laden Roller Brake Testing gives a direct, proven measurement of braking performance but requires scheduled tests and downtime. EBPMS offers real-time monitoring, reducing the need for physical tests, but requires an initial investment in hardware and training. From April 2025, either method will be accepted for compliance, so the best choice depends on your operational setup.
